CLALS Undergraduate Advisory Board

Center for Latin American and Latinx Studies (CLALS)

Undergraduate Advisory Board

Overview

Are you interested in advancing and promoting Latin American and Latinx Studies at Penn and in the larger community? If so, apply now to be part of the CLALS Undergraduate Advisory Board (UAB)!

The CLALS Undergraduate Advisory Collective/Board (UAC/Board) is a selective group of undergraduates deeply committed to the study, advancement, and promotion of Latin American and Latinx Studies on campus and beyond. The board will consist of approximately 4-6 students across various years in their undergraduate career who meet regularly, often with CLALS leadership. The UAB serves as an advisory board for the Center sharing insights and advice with faculty and staff about curriculum, course offerings, general programming, and UAB governance and strengthening.  UAB students also participate in CLALS sponsored events, as well as College-wide events and student-focused programming. The expected time commitment is an average of 4 hours per month.

For the 2025-2026 year, we expect the UAB members to participate in the following:

§  At least one CLALSIS (internal speaker series event)

§  Migrating Lives participatory mural project with ASAM, CLALS, CCATE, and Karen Community of Philadelphia (KCAP)

§  CLALS Alumni event – UAB members will play a key role in organizing this event.

§  An optional activity/event that the group may decide on

§  Regular CLALS-College activities such as Fall Major/Minor Fair, Quaker Days, and LALS Major/Minor dinner

What are additional benefits in becoming a member of the CLALS UAB or a CLALS fellow?

As a board member, you will have opportunities to meet one-on-one with many of the CLALS guests, including distinguished and renowned scholars, diplomats, artists, and journalists. You will also receive guidance, mentorship, and general support from CLALS leadership and faculty, including the Director and Associate Director. As stated above, you will be instrumental in shaping the LALS curriculum and increasing awareness of Latin American and Latinx studies among the student body.  Overall, the UAB is critical to the current programming and the growing stature of Center of Latin American and Latinx Studies on the Penn campus and globally. You can influence CLALS’ historical legacy at Penn!
