On this Indigenous People's Day, Penn Today wrote about CLALS postdoc Belén Unzueta's fall course that studies the historical origin of racial constructs in the Americas. Her course focuses on the history of racial classifications and Indigenous land dispossesion as part of the Penn-Mellon Just Futures Dispossesions in the Americas project.
“I think that’s important, because we tend to study the reproduction of racial inequality, which is like a never-ending circle,” she says. “Truly these are not universal principles. We can study the historical construction of how they came to be, and hopefully how can we end them in some way.”
