The Nancy Farriss Graduate Student Paper Award is given annually to the best paper in Latin American and Latinx Studies written by a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania. The prize honors the scholarly leadership of Dr. Nancy M. Farriss, who founded the Latin American Cultures Program at Penn in the 1980s.
The submission must be a single-authored paper (or an excerpt of a more extended project) no longer than 9,000 words including bibliography, written while the student is still in a PhD program at Penn. Papers can be written in English or Spanish. If you have further questions about a paper written in a different language, please email us at clals-upenn@sas.upenn.edu. Papers that have previously been peer-reviewed and/or published are not eligible for this award.
The prize, including a cash award, will be announced in April. If you have any questions, please reach out to clals-upenn@sas.upenn.edu.
Please submit your paper by Friday, March 6. 2026 here.
