Cándido Figueredo Ruíz has had a long and distinguished career with the Paraguayan newspaper, ABC Color. His work has exposed drug trafficking operations and organized crime, specifically in the border region between Brazil and Paraguay. His investigative reporting led to to a series of death threats that made it necessary for him to live with a 24-hour police guard for almost two decades. In 2012, Figueredo Ruiz received an International Press Freedom Award from the Committee to Protect Journalists.
